Do you need an International Driving Permit? Yes, I think so, if you are driving or renting a car while overseas. Commonly also called an International Driving License.

What is it?
An International Driving Permit is proof that you have a valid drivers license in your own country. It is internationally recognized in many countries of the world and translates your license into some of the common languages of the world.
It is not a driving license. You need to carry your driver’s license with you as well as the International Driving Permit. Some countries fine you if you are stopped without one.
I also see that rental car companies may tell you that you don’t need an International Driving Permit, but the different countries decide that, not the rental car companies.

How to get one
In New Zealand the AA (Automobile Association) is the only place that you can get one. Likewise in many countries similar automobile organisations are the only authorized issuers.
Here is the NZ information page including how to apply and the cost. Applying at an AA office is $28 but when you apply online or post an application, it is $38 plus delivery. In Australia apply here or have a look at this info.
I say, just get one and tuck it in your wallet, with your license. Then it is there if you need it, particularly if you are planning on driving in different countries. You will need an International Drivers Permit to hire an ATV also known as quads or 4 wheelers as well, if you are not from the EU.
Other info for driving in Europe
I have found a useful page on the UK site drive-alive.co.uk . It lists driving info for various countries including speed limits for motorway, open road and town. Each country has a page that you can click onto for more info.
Just a thought to finish with – check your driver’s license is current.
